This week a small bone was thrown to sellers on eBay's flagship eBay.com website. Effective February 18th, they are making all additional pictures, picture pack and gallery plus free for listings in the Collectibles, Art, Antiques and Pottery & Glass categories. So at least we now know eBay has finally recognized the categories and sellers they have been undermining by their blinkered attention to volume sellers rather than the providers of the more interesting offers that discretionary buyers want to browse. Yesterday's public humiliation of the former Chairman and CEO of HBOS and RBS was perhaps amusing to some but why are we obsessed with kicking these people instead of learning what they can reveal? What's the best way to pump up enthusiasm among eBay's millions of users? Ignore them? Secretly meet with a few "top" sellers and make them sign non-disclosure agreements about the plans revealed? It seems the eBay level playing field will need to find a new, even lower level again as, in my opinion, they are about to tilt it toward the bigger sellers again. (02/11/2009)
