For discussing all things Football (or soccer!).
I'd like to start this thread by congratulating West Ham on their victory over Man Utd the other day. |

| Have you heard of a soccer player named Freddy Adu? The Los Angeles Times reckons he is going to move to the Manchester United for megabucks. |

wel doone west ham, teach the rags a lesson
I have heard of freddy adu, a player who once apaprently Juve and Milan were chasing at the tender age of about 10, he is supposed to be that good and a serious contender for one of the great players.. However i last heard that Man united had had him on trials, and his trial had ended with no further action at the moment, this was a couiple of weeks ago though |

I was surprised to see this thread go quiet for so long, we keep hearing how you Brits are fanatical about your soccer. However, the Chargers are still looking good to win the Super Bowl. |

I hate soccer, but did watch American football when I lived in the states. I prefer rugby to soccer. You get a better class of supporter at a rugby game. Supporters don't need to be segregated on different sides of the pitch at rugby matches - from what I've heard, never been to a match. |

Would it be really vapid to remark that rugby players have better physiques too? |

| I saw a piece on TV once about a rugby game in Wales, Cardif, I think. The point of the piece was how the Welsh people sing at the games. It was awesome. Is singing at games part of the rugby scene? I've seen some supporters of soccer singing at the games but nothing like those Wales supporters. |

My father knows a lot of the Welsh rugby songs (he's Welsh - and a rugby fan). Max Boyce has a lot to answer for. I prefer some of the anthems that are sung in Welsh tbh. The Scottish supporters tend to stick to 'Flower of Scotland' from what I can see. I wonder what the English sing about?
I prefer rugby songs to football chants. For example, the Welsh will sing (in Welsh):
Quote: The land of my fathers, the land of my choice,
The land in which poets and minstrels rejoice;
The land whose stern warriors were true to the core,
While bleeding for freedom of yore.
Aberdeen football supporters 'sing':
Quote: we're red - you're dead - we're bouncing on your head - we're Aberdeen

I have to admit I think that is very funny.
At a recent soccer game here between the USA and Mexico the Mexican fans burned numerous USA flags and sang songs. Unfortunately my Spanish is not so good so I have no idea what they were singing but I bet it was not about how much they love us. |

You just don't see that kind of crap at a rugby game. I had the misfortune to be living in Amsterdam during Euro 2000. The Netherlands co-hosted the championship with Belgium (if I remember rightly). I watched from my apartment window while England fans lobbed rotten fish at Turkey supporters. On the news they showed about 20 riot squad police vans pulling up outside an Amsterdam police headquarters filled with England supporters who'd been busy 'bringing the game into disrepute' all round Amsterdam. Heaven help the world if Scotland ever break onto the international circuit is all I can say. |
