Everyone knows that the consequences of the wildfires here in the Los Angeles area is that we have mud slides when we get a rainey day. The foliage is gone so when it rains there is nothing to hold the hills, and some people's houses, from heading off in search of a new zip code.
Nobody talks about the effect the fires have on the bee population. The foliage which should be in full bloom right now is gone so the bees set off looking for a new source. I have orange, apricot and nectarine trees in my garden which are in bloom now so guess what dropped in for a visit.
This swarm of bees latched on to the side of our house yesterday and no amount of barking by our dogs would move them on.
A quick call brought our good friend Walt the beekeeper around in a hurry.
He placed a honeycomb on the roof above the swarm and they litterally climbed over each other to get to it.
Next he placed what he calls a travelling hive on the roof and within minutes all the bees were safely inside.
Beekeepers around here rent out their hives to fruit growers. Walt has a contract with an almond grower.
Walt charges $60 to remove a swarm of bees but the average cost is $160 |
